The scientific activities of the European Society of Cardiology depend upon research in the domain of basic cardiovascular science. The Council on Basic Cardiovascular Science was created in September 2004 to enhance the importance of basic science to clinical cardiology.

In 2008 the Council has awarded 3 different grants to basic scientists: the Norman R. Alpert Visiting Scientist Award, the Outstanding Achievement Awards and Travel Grants (for travel relating to the ESC Congress).
