Raffaele De CaterinaThe scientific activities of the European Society of Cardiology depend upon research in the domain of basic cardiovascular science. The Council on Basic Cardiovascular Science was created in September 2004 to enhance the importance of basic science to clinical cardiology.

In 2008 the Council has awarded 3 different grants to basic scientists: the Norman R. Alpert Visiting Scientist Award, the Outstanding Achievement Awards and Travel Grants (for travel relating to the ESC Congress).

New for 2009: Council on Basic Cardiovascular Science Summer School

A new event is to be introduced by the Council in 2009: the Summer School for young basic scientists.

Aimed at PhD students in European programmes in cardiovascular diseases and biology, the first Summer School will be held from 5-9 July 2009 at the ESC headquarters in Sophia Antipolis, near Nice, France. Registration from 2 January to 1 April 2009.
