Named after the late Dr. Norman Alpert, who greatly supported international scientific exchange, the Norman R. Alpert Visiting Scientist Award, established by the Council on Basic Cardiovascular Sciences of the AHA and the Council on Basic Cardiovascular Science of the ESC, amounts to 50,000 Euros. The award will be presented at the ESC Congress in Munich, August-September 2008, and at the AHA Scientific Sessions in New Orleans, November 2008.
Eligibility
- The candidate must be a citizen or resident of one of the ESC member countries.
- The candidate must be working in an institution in one of the ESC member countries when the application is submitted.
- The candidate must be a MD or PhD below 35 years of age (including trainees and junior faculty members). Allowance can be made for career breaks.
- The candidate is expected to be/become a member of the Basic Cardiovascular Science (BCVS) Council of the American Heart Association, and of the European Society of Cardiology.
- The head of the host lab should be a member of the BCVS Council of the AHA.
- The preponderant criteria for selecting the winner will be the quality of the candidate, the quality of the research proposal and the quality of the host lab. The selection committee will be made of representatives of both the AHA and the ESC.
It is expected that the winner will attend both the ESC Congress 2008 in Munich as well as the American Heart Association Scientific Sessions 2008 in New Orleans.
How to apply
The candidate should submit the following to the ESC Office for Councils* by both email and by post before 31 May 2008:
- A short Research Proposal (no longer than five pages) including a summary, an introduction, the overall goal and a research plan.
- Curriculum vitae.
- Letter from the host lab to confirm that it has the resources (funds, equipment, staff) to allow the winner to conduct the research project.
- Letter from the home lab to confirm that the awardee will be offered a position following the visiting period.
