Who we are?

A twin approach has been adopted to manage the Euro Heart Survey activities:

  • A flexible and non permanent Project structure, enabling the best clinical and scientific expertise in a given project field to be established for the duration of the defined project. This would cover the Project Expert Committee group.
  • A permanent core structure at the Heart House consisting of operational management, site relationship coordination and central database expertise, providing the constant quality control and continuity necessary to underpin such a business and to ensure that the projects are completed on time and on budget. This covers the Euro Heart Survey Committee and the Euro Heart Survey Department staff at the Heart House.

Both of these structures may have an interface with the clinical sites selected throughout Europe. The sites enrolled into a particular project are selected by the Scientific Expert committee, the National Co-ordinators and the Euro Heart Survey Department.

 How we work?

As a European institution specializing in various aspects of cardiology, one of the needs of the ESC is to understand differences in the prevalence of cardiovascular diseases throughout the member countries, as well as differences in the availability and use of cardiovascular diagnostic and therapeutic procedures.  In order to address these differences, the Euro Heart Survey (EHS), within the ESC, assesses:

  • Clinical practice in relation to existing guidelines in cardiology
  • Applicability of results of major clinical trials
  • Outcome of different strategies for patient management.

This is performed via Surveys on specific cardiovascular diseases. Each survey is conducted under the guidance of a committee composed of eminent professionals on the subject under study.

The questionnaires consist of general (demographic) and issue-specific (topic oriented) data elements.

The data is collected through our secure website to ensure security of the patient's clinical information and confidentiality for all participants. All data is encrypted for transfer.

Why you should join?

In participating (a minimum one week per month), participating centres will be given feedback on their practice in the form of regular benchmark reports. This will allow them to measure, whether or not, there is a gap between their practice and the ESC Guidelines, within a specific therapeutic area and to compare their centre with the national and European averages.

For individual cardiologists this is an opportunity to take part in a large-scale coordinated European programme as Investigator and even co-write survey manuscripts. Cardiologists may also participate as survey committee members.

Participating hospitals can compare their management procedures and outcome with established guidelines, and with other hospitals both in their own country and throughout Europe. Health care providers and governments may compare characteristics of specific patient populations, procedures and outcome in their environment with European standards and with those in other countries. Hospitals are acknowledged in Euro Heart Survey publications.
